From answers to agents: what changed in 12 months

By idealbusiness.ai team · Sources checked on 30 October 2026

In a year, AI assistants went from recommending shops to agents that browse, compare and buy for the shopper. Here is what changed, what the new terms mean, and what you, as a shop owner, need to do.

Two stages, one direction

For a while, the main question was whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity would mention your shop when someone asked for a recommendation. That still matters, and it is live today.

Over the last twelve months a second stage arrived. AI assistants now show products with current prices, compare them, hold a cart and, in some places, complete the purchase. This is what people mean by "agentic commerce". It is real, but it is early, and most of the checkout part is US-first.

The timeline

What the new pieces do

Product feeds. A structured list of your products, prices, stock and shipping that you send to a platform. This is how ChatGPT now receives catalogs (via ACP) [5] and how Google Merchant Center has always worked. It is the foundation.

Checkout protocols (ACP and UCP). Agreed rules that let an AI assistant pass an order to your shop and get a confirmation back, without a custom integration for every assistant. ACP comes from OpenAI and Stripe [1]; UCP comes from Google and partners [3]. In every announcement we read, the shop stays the seller. [1][2][3][11]

MCP (Model Context Protocol). A standard way for an AI agent to call a "tool" that a business offers. Shopify's Storefront Catalog MCP, for example, lets agents search one store's catalog, look up products and variants, and find physical store locations. [12]

WebMCP. A proposed web standard that lets a website declare actions that an AI agent in the browser can call directly, instead of guessing which button to click. [7] Chrome calls it "under active discussion and subject to change" and says it is designed mainly for browser tasks "with a human in the loop". [7] It is in origin trials in Chrome 149 and Edge 150, and Brave has added experimental support to its Leo assistant. [9] It is a developer topic for now, not a shop-owner task.

Jargon in one line

  • Agentic commerce: AI agents that compare and buy for a shopper, not just recommend.
  • Product feed: a structured file of your products, prices and stock that platforms read.
  • ACP: OpenAI and Stripe's protocol for sharing feeds and handling orders in ChatGPT.
  • UCP: Google-led open protocol for agent checkout, carts and catalog lookups.
  • MCP: a standard way for agents to use tools a business exposes.
  • WebMCP: a draft browser standard for websites to expose actions to in-browser agents.
  • Merchant / seller of record: the business legally selling to the customer, still you.

Where things stand, honestly

Discovery is broad. OpenAI rolled its richer product discovery out to all Free, Go, Plus and Pro ChatGPT users and did not limit the announcement to particular countries. [5] Google says retailers globally can add "conversational attributes" to product data. [6]

Agent checkout is narrow. Every in-assistant checkout launch we checked started in the US. [1][2][3][11] Google has named Canada and Australia next and the UK later [6]; we found no announced date for the EU, Switzerland or Latin America. OpenAI, meanwhile, has stepped back from its own checkout and lets merchants use theirs. [5]

So for shops in Central Europe, DACH, Spain, Ireland or Latin America, the practical priority today is being found and correctly described. Agent checkout is worth understanding, not yet worth a project.

What a shop owner should do

You rarely implement these protocols yourself. Platforms and payment providers do most of that work. OpenAI says Shopify merchants are covered via Shopify Catalog and names Salesforce and Stripe as feed providers [5]; Google names Commerce Inc, Salesforce and Stripe as UCP partners. [4] If you run WooCommerce, Shoptet or PrestaShop, ask your platform, agency or plugin vendor what they support.

Your job is the data the protocols carry:

  1. Keep your product feed complete and current. Titles, variants, prices, stock and identifiers. Agents can check live inventory and pricing [4], so gaps show.
  2. Mark up product pages with structured data. Product, price, availability, shipping and returns, matching what shoppers see.
  3. Publish clear policies. Shipping costs and times, returns, warranty and contact details, on pages that are easy to find and read.
  4. Make sure the same facts appear everywhere. Feed, page, markup and policy pages should agree.
  5. Watch your platform's announcements for ChatGPT and UCP options in your market.

None of this is wasted if agent checkout arrives late in your country: the same data is what AI assistants use to describe and recommend you today.
