Shoptet and AI assistants: check the one setting that decides if they can use your shop

Why it matters

None of this guarantees rankings or citations. It removes a reason to be left out.

What Shoptet's AI settings do

Shoptet has a built-in Content Signals setting under Vzhled a obsah → Editor → HTML kód, in the Robots.txt section, above the text editor [1]. It tells automated services, including search engines and AI tools, what they may use your shop's content for, and writes the choice into your robots.txt as a Content-Signal line, so you do not type it yourself [1].

There are three items, each set to Povolit (allow), Nepovolit (do not allow) or Nenastaveno (not set) [1]:

Shoptet labelSignalMeaning
Vyhledávačesearchindexing, links and snippets [1]
Odpovědi AIai-inputusing your content in AI answers [1]
Trénování modelu AIai-traintraining and fine-tuning AI models [1]

Defaults: search allowed, AI answers not set, AI training not allowed [1]. On Shoptet demo shops this appears as Content-Signal: search=yes, ai-train=no [11]. "Not set" means you neither grant nor restrict that use [2]. So by default your shop does not say yes to AI answers.

Content Signals is a robots.txt extension published by Cloudflare. Like all robots.txt rules, it states your preference; it does not technically stop anyone [2].

The trap: custom robots.txt switches the settings off

Shoptet's help page warns: "Pokud do sekce Robots.txt vložíte vlastní text, nastavení Content Signals se neprojeví." ("If you enter your own text in the Robots.txt section, the Content Signals settings will not take effect.") [1]

Any text in that editor box, even one old line added years ago by an agency, means your Content Signals choices are not published. Shoptet adds custom text to the end of its standard robots.txt [1]. We saw exactly this pattern on shoptet.cz itself: extra rules at the end and no Content-Signal line [11].

Check your current setup in 2 minutes

  1. Open https://<your-shop>/robots.txt in a browser.
  2. Look for a line starting Content-Signal: (usually under User-agent: *).
    • Missing? Either your settings are off because of custom text, or every item is "not set".
    • Present? Read the values: ai-input=yes means AI answers are allowed; no ai-input means not set.
  3. Look for groups that block AI assistants, for example User-agent: OAI-SearchBot followed by Disallow: /. Blocking a search or answer crawler can keep you out of that assistant's answers [3][4].
  4. Scroll to the end of the standard Disallow list. Anything extra is custom text from the editor box.

Option 1: use Shoptet's built-in settings (recommended if you have no custom robots.txt)

  1. In admin, go to Vzhled a obsah → Editor → HTML kód → Robots.txt [1].
  2. Set Vyhledávače: Povolit and Odpovědi AI: Povolit.
  3. Set Trénování modelu AI to your choice. We suggest keeping Shoptet's default, Nepovolit, unless you want to allow training.
  4. Leave the editor box below empty. If it has text, first check whether you still need it (see Option 2).
  5. Click Uložit [1].

Option 2: you need custom robots.txt

If an agency or app needs custom rules, your Content Signals choices are no longer published [1], so add the Content-Signal line yourself.

  1. Download our example: robots-ai-example.txt.
  2. Paste only the active (non-#) lines you need into the Robots.txt editor box. Shoptet adds them after its standard rules [1] and already adds a Sitemap line [11].
  3. Do not add separate groups for AI assistants: Shoptet's standard rules already let them in. If your box has an old group that blocks one (for example User-agent: OAI-SearchBot with Disallow: /), delete it. An assistant named in its own group follows only that group, so a partial copy of the rules can also expose your cart and login pages.
  4. Decide on training: remove the # from the training block to block it.
  5. Stay under Shoptet's 8,192-character limit for the box [1].

FAQ

Does blocking GPTBot hide me from ChatGPT? No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training and OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search, and each setting is independent: you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot [3]. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links [3].

Does Google-Extended affect AI Overviews? Google's page on AI Overviews and AI Mode says the main control is Googlebot's robots.txt rules, because these features are part of Search. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no extra requirements [6]. Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search" [7]. Note that it also covers grounding in Gemini Apps, not only training [7]. Blocking it can reduce your use in Gemini answers.

What about Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Apple? For Claude, Claude-SearchBot indexes for search, Claude-User fetches pages for user questions, and ClaudeBot collects training data [4]. PerplexityBot powers Perplexity search results and is not used for training. Perplexity-User fetches pages for users and "generally ignores robots.txt rules" [5]. Microsoft shows sites cited in Copilot and says Bing respects robots.txt [8]. Keep Bing's crawler (Bingbot) allowed if you want to be eligible for Copilot citations. Blocking Applebot-Extended opts you out of Apple model training and keeps you in Apple search results [9].

Is robots.txt legally binding or enforced? No. It expresses preferences, and some operators may ignore them [2].
