Turning AI-assistant visitors into sales
Being mentioned by ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot is only half the job. The other half is what happens when that shopper clicks through to your shop. These visitors are still few for most shops, but they behave differently from search visitors, and a few changes help you turn them into orders.
Why these visitors are worth the effort
The largest public data sets come from the US:
- Adobe reports that in July 2026, visitors from AI assistants to US retail sites converted at a 60% higher rate than other visitors and brought 53% more revenue per visit [1].
- Shopify reports that more than half of AI-referred sessions on its stores start on a product page, compared with 20% for organic search, and that orders from AI search carry 14% higher average order values (Q1 2026) [2]. In Q2 2026, AI-referred sessions grew 197% year over year and orders tripled [3].
We found no comparable public figures for Europe or Latin America. The pattern is still useful: these shoppers have often compared options in the chat already, and they land deep in your shop, close to a decision.
1. See them in your numbers
You can't improve what you can't see. The main tools now separate AI-assistant traffic:
- Google Analytics 4 added an "AI Assistant" channel to its default reports on 13 May 2026. Visits from recognised assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are grouped there automatically [4]. Visits that arrive without referrer information still show up as Direct [5].
- ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto the links it sends, so its visits are easy to spot in any analytics tool [6]. - Shopify: in any Analytics report, filter the Referrer Channel by AI answer engines. For Gemini, filter Referrer Host by gemini.google.com. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews count as organic search [2].
- Microsoft Clarity has an "AIPlatform" channel for visits from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity [7].
- Google Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in its Performance report, together with other search clicks [8].
Two-minute check: open your analytics, look at the last 30 days of AI-assistant visits, and note which pages they landed on and how many ordered.
2. Make the product page a good landing page
If an AI assistant sends shoppers straight to a product page, that page does the job your homepage usually does. OpenAI's product feed specification asks merchants for the product page URL, "with the variant selected when possible", and to keep it stable [9].
Check that each product page answers, without scrolling or clicking:
- What it is, the price and whether it is in stock.
- Delivery cost and delivery time to the shopper's country.
- Returns, in one line, with a link to the full policy.
- Who you are: company name and a way to contact you.
- A clear way to buy, plus a route to related products if this one isn't quite right.
Keep product URLs stable. A link an AI assistant shared last month should not end in an error page.
3. Give AI assistants your offer, not just your products
AI assistants can show more than a name and a price, if you supply it:
- ChatGPT: OpenAI says merchants share "product feeds and promotions" through the Agentic Commerce Protocol [10]. Its feed format has fields for sale price, shipping price, returns (deadline and policy link), star rating and review count [9]. Promotions can be an amount off, a percentage off or free shipping [11].
- Google: Merchant Center's conversational attributes, such as questions and answers or related products, "help AI systems and conversational agents better understand your products" [12]. Google says retailers globally can add them [13]. Loyalty benefits can appear in AI Mode and the Gemini app, currently in the US only [14].
- Reviews: Google's product ratings programme shows reviews in ads and free product listings and needs at least 50 reviews in total [15].
Keep the offer consistent. The price, shipping cost and return terms in your feed should match your product page and your checkout.
4. Be ready for checkout inside the chat
Today most AI visitors still buy on your own site. Checkout inside the AI assistant is arriving, US first:
- Google: checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol is open to select merchants for products eligible in the US, Canada and Australia. You remain the seller of record [16].
- Microsoft Copilot Checkout is open only to "English-language merchants who sell to US buyers". Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically; PayPal and Stripe merchants can opt in [17].
- Shopify: with agentic storefronts, ChatGPT shoppers complete their purchase on your own store checkout. Shoppers in Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta can use a Shopify-powered checkout without leaving the AI channel [18].
- OpenAI now lets merchants use their own checkout instead of buying inside ChatGPT [10].
For shops in Europe and Latin America, that means your own checkout is where AI visitors pay today. Make it fast: guest checkout, the payment methods your customers expect, and no surprise costs at the last step.
What to do this month
- Find your AI-assistant visitors in your analytics and note their top landing pages.
- Review those pages against the five points above.
- Add sale prices, shipping, returns and ratings to your product feed.
- Make sure feed, product page and checkout show the same price and terms.
- Ask your platform or payment provider which AI checkout options it supports in your market.
